The Farm at Prophetstown Hires Executive Director

Pamela Dexter will become executive director of The Farm, effective January 6. Dexter previously served as Purdue Research Foundation senior development director and chief development officer for student life at Purdue.

“Pam Dexter brings strong experience in administrative leadership, fund raising, marketing and volunteer relationships to this challenging position,” said Steve Dietrich, president of The Farm’s board of directors. “Her vision, enthusiasm for the Farm’s mission and communication skills make her an ideal choice to build on the successes we have enjoyed in recent years through Leslie Martin Conwell’s outstanding work.”

Dexter, who grew up on her family’s farm in Benton County, will succeed Conwell, who is retiring after serving as executive director since 2015.

“I feel very fortunate to follow Leslie, who has built a culture of excellence at The Farm,” Dexter said. “I look forward to working with our communities, our state and people everywhere who love The Farm at Prophetstown. It is an American treasure, giving individuals and families unique opportunities to experience and learn about midwestern farm life and homesteading in the early 20th century.”

“When I was younger, I would help my dad move farm equipment from field to field and drive the grain trucks to the elevator. I didn’t always like to do the chores required to take care of a farm, but those experiences are part of who I am, and I treasure them now.”

As chief development officer for student life at Purdue since 2015, Dexter led fund-raising efforts that secured more than $34 million in funding, including $2.9 million in corporate sponsorships.

From March 2014, until November 2015, Dexter served as foundation director at Indiana University Health Arnett where she raised more than $275,000 and supervised volunteer activities, marketing initiatives and a strategic planning process. She created the organization’s first $150,000 endowment.

Previously, she was director of development for Purdue’s College of Health and Human Services and coordinator of the university’s EPICS High School Program. From 2004 to 2006, she was director of marketing and resource development for Lafayette Neighborhood Housing Services.

A graduate of Benton Central High School, Dexter earned a bachelor’s degree from Purdue in 1993.

Located in West Lafayette near Battle Ground, Ind., The Farm at Prophetstown is a non-profit organization operating on 100 acres of land leased from Prophetstown State Park. The Farm offers a unique experience on all aspects of farm life. Programs revolve around 1920s farms as they began the transition from animal power to mechanization. The Farm is a training farm for sustainable agriculture, homesteading, gardening, canning, farm-to-table cooking, sewing and quilting. It draws on a wide range of resources such as beekeepers, master gardeners, farm experts and home economics experts. Admission is free with entry to the state park.
